About
My name is Dr Matt Cottrell and I'm a Clinical Psychologist working in Melbourne specialising in the treatment of trauma-related anxiety and depression difficulties. I work part-time at The Victoria Clinic as the Senior Clinical Psychologist managing inpatient services. In addition I train and supervise post-graduate students on placement from the major Melbourne universities, in my role as Senior Clinical Psychologist. Using a combination of group and individual treatment approaches, my work at The Victoria Clinic is primarily concerned with helping people in the acute phase of psychological distress.
In addition to my work at the hospital I see people with a wide-range of psychological difficulties for individual psychological treatment, in an outpatient environment. Utilising primarily a schema-therapy approach to treatment, I aim to help people deal with the emotional patterns as well as the cognitive patterns that lead to ongoing mental health difficulties.
I believe that people have the answers to many of their own difficulties, but require assistance to make sense of the issues that face them. Through a comprehensive assessment and by using our therapeutic relationship to work on the problems together, we are able to form a trusting and safe relationship to help resolve these underlying difficulties.
The work I do in my individual clinical psychological treatment covers a number of areas including:
-
Depression and other mood disorders
-
Anxiety Disorders (including Panic Attacks, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Generalised Anxiety Disorder)
-
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
-
Personality Disorders
-
Relationship difficulties
-
Study and work-related problems
-
Psychological assessment and formulation
I am a full member of the Australian Psychological Society and have a clinical endorsement with the Psychology Board of Australia. I am registered to deliver clinical supervision to psychologists.
